Apply Now For 2016

Community Groups, Individuals, Special interest groups, Everybody is invited to apply for next year's PURE Mile competition.

The PURE Mile is an environmental initiative of The PURE (Protecting Uplands and Rural Environments) Project which aims to foster a greater appreciation and awareness of our country road-scapes by rewarding and acknowledging local community efforts. The competition encourages communities and groups living in rural areas to nominate a mile stretch of road (approx. 1.6 km), and keep this area litter/rubbish free, research information about their local wild flowers, plants, trees, animals, built heritage, history, and the folklore associated with their areas. A large number of communities go the extra mile by repairing and painting old traditional gates, rebuilding stone walls, improving stiles, maintaining bridges, cleaning up farmlands and entrances, erecting bat and bird boxes, trimming hedges (outside of bird nesting season) and much more. In Miles where very little physical management is required, groups can focus on local research, or, on initiatives to increase awareness and appreciation of the Mile among the local community.

For examples of  the wonderful heritage information that has been collected on past PURE Miles in Wicklow, by individuals and local schoolchildren check this category of this website here. The PURE Mile makes a great school project exploring  local wildlife, history and folklore. Why not talk to your local school about getting involved.
